Landslides in the Portland, Oregon Metropolitan AreaIn 1998, geologists with Portland State University published a report entitled Landslides in the Portland, Oregon Metropolitan Area Resulting from the Storm of February 1996: Inventory Map, Database and Evaluation that documents the extent of landslides following the 1996 flood and evaluates causes. Human influences, associated with road construction and building placement, were associated with 76% of landslides. The report identifies the need for better planning and technical review to avoid building structures in landslide-prone areas and to control stormwater flows.
